Do Or Die

March 7, 2015

With their backs up against the wall the Dauphin Kings will try and avoid an early elimination from the MJHL Playoffs tonight at Credit Union Place.

It’s game two of the best of three Survivor Series between Dauphin and Waywayseecappo. On Thursday Wayway won a tight contest in overtime by a score of 3-2. It was a game that could have went either way. If the Kings can carry over their effort from Thursday they’ll have a shot at winning tonight.

As mentioned earlier Dauphin went 2-0-1 against Waywayseecappo this season at Credit Union Place, but we all know that means nothing in the playoffs. If the Kings do win tonight, the third and deciding game of the series will happen tomorrow night in Wayway.

Tonight’s contest can be heard on 730 CKDM and watched on FASTHockey. I’ll have the call on both. You can listen to the Pre Game Show on CKDM starting at 6:45pm. Opening face off is pegged for 7:00pm.

Intermission Treats: Today in the first and second intermissions we’ll be checking in on yet another busy out of town scoreboard. The other Survivor Series between the OCN Blizzard and Selkirk Steelers resumes up north. In Winnipegosis the Parkland Rangers play game four of their best of five series against the Winnipeg Thrashers for the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League playoffs. Two of the other three playoff series continue as well. The Under 18 Women’s Provincial Curling Championship continues in Melita. Dauphin’s Hanne Jensen is there along with Winnipegosis’ Stacy Sime. Plus on top of that there games in the North Central Hockey League, WHL and NHL.

Team Stats

Kings (0-1): On the edge of elimination the Dauphin Kings return to Credit Union Place where they went 14-12-4 this season. Game one had Dauphin getting a lot of good chances but they were unable to capitalize on most of them. A key tonight for the Kings may be getting more traffic in front of 20 year old goaltender Mitch Wiebe who, for the most part, had strong positioning in game one. Whoever starts for Dauphin will need to be just as good if not better. Special Teams in game one were a non factor, but I did think the Kings looked good on their two man advantages. They had a few chances to score but couldn’t get anything through. Kyle Bird had two assists in the opening contest, meaning he leads the Kings in playoff scoring with two points.

Drake Bodie is on a 3 game point streak (1G, 2A).

Wolverines (1-0): For stretches in game one the Wolverines played very strong. Then were some other sections where they didn’t look very good, getting hemmed in by the Kings and needing their goaltender to bail them out. If Waywayseecappo is going to move on and do anything in the next round of the post season goaltender Mitch Wiebe will need to be their best player on a nightly basis. Wayway didn’t get much on the Power Play thanks to Dauphin’s discipline.¬†George Splichal (1G, 1A) leads the Wolverines in points through one playoff game with two.
