Important Weekend

September 18, 2015

The Kings and Virden Oil Capitals open up a home-and-home series tonight in Dauphin as the Manitoba Junior Hockey League pre season begins to wind down.

With the Kings off year last season the rivalry between the two clubs took a little bit of time off. It was still there at times though, especially near the end of the season when some important games were on the line.

The key story right now for the Dauphin Kings remains their injury situation. With more than a handful of players out the team’s tough decisions will be hard then originally anticipated, and they were already expected to be extremely difficult. You’ll hear more about who’s injured and with what in the interview below with Kings Head Coach and General Manager Marlin Murray. Meanwhile, David Brumm is expected to make his debut tonight with Dauphin. He was acquired earlier this week from the WHL’s Vancouver Giants.

On the other side of the coin are the Virden Oil Capitals. A team that I am not 100% convinced will run the show in the MJHL this year, but I still expect them to be quietly inside the league’s top five, maybe even the top three. As of right now Virden is very solid in all positions, especially on defence, however I can’t really pick out anyone that I think will be a big point getter on the ‘Caps. Regardless, they will still be a very good team this season.

Opening face off tonight at Credit Union Place is 7:00pm. The Kings and Oil Capitals will lock horns again tomorrow night at Tundra Oil & Gas Place in Virden, that game starts at 7:30pm.

The Dauphin Kings added 20 year old forward Kurt Sonne from the Kindersley Klippers for future considerations on Wednesday. Sonne is a six foot , 170 pound product from of Maple Ridge, BC. He joins the Kings after spending last season with the Estevan Bruins. In 53 games, Sonne had 19 points including eleven goals. He was acquired by Kindersley in the summer. “Kurt is a player we have tracked for a while now.” said Kings Assistant Coach Marc Berry. “With the injuries we have run into early, and his availability, it was a matter of timing. Kurt will add skill and a veteran presence up front as we look to get off to a good start.” Sonne will join the Kings in time for the final two exhibitions games this weekend against the Virden Oil Capitals. Puck drop for Friday night’s game at Credit Union Place is 7:00pm.

Here’s Kings Head Coach & GM Marlin Murray on the decisions ahead, injuries, if he’ll be on the bench this weekend and talk on exhibition as the pre season concludes this weekend…

Kings to Honour Dauphin Fire Department With Limited Edition 3rd Jersey

The Kings red 3rd jerseys this season will feature the Dauphin Fire Department Logo on the front of the jersey.  The Kings authentic logo will be on both shoulders of the special edition jersey.

The Dauphin Kings organization is honoring the Dauphin Fire Department and their past and present members in recognition of extraordinary services the City of Dauphin and surrounding areas.

GM and Head Coach Marlin Murray discusses how the jersey came to fruition, “I was driving by the Fire Hall one day and seen the firefighters just getting back from a call.  They looked exhausted.  I thought to myself, we are so lucky to have them in our community.  By the time I drove 4 blocks to my house, I thought the Kings could honour them with this jersey.  From there, we took the idea to the executive.  They really liked the idea.  After the meeting I reached out to Cam Abrey, the Fire Chief and set up a meeting with him and discussed the idea.  He liked it as well.  Once everyone agreed with the idea Dave Campbell, Owner of Parkland Source for Source and long-time King sponsor and I sat down and went over different scenarios and come up with this jersey.  We wanted to keep the Kings color scheme but also implement their logo in it. We really like how it turned out”.

The Dauphin Kings will also be recognizing different members of the Dauphin Fire Department throughout the course of the season by having them drop the ceremonial puck drop before specific games.

The Kings organization would like to thank North of 51/Rogers Wireless for sponsoring the jerseys.  The jerseys will be auctioned off at the conclusion of the 2015-2016 season.  Stay tuned for more details and game dates in which the jerseys will be worn!
