Lucky Seven

October 16, 2015

The Dauphin Kings used a big second period to pick up their second straight victory, a 7-4 decision over the Winnipeg Blues Friday night at Credit Union Place.

Dauphin got started early. Just six seconds in Matthew Greening notched his third of the season. After that the Kings kind of fell asleep for the bulk of the opening period, but then came alive late and Shaq Houle picked up his second of the campaign on a nice tip in front.

In the second period the Kings looked solid, scoring four goals. They went to Drake Bodie (4), David Brumm (5), Hayden Pierce (1) and Romano Morrison (2). Kirklan Lycar (7) added an empty netter in the late stages of the third period.

The contest was filled with penalties. Most of which were stick in infractions. David Brumm took three stick penalties and because of that he was ejected from the game. The ejection came in the third period. Overall I counted Winnipeg having 11 man advantages, they scored on two. Dauphin had seven chances and didn’t score on any. A number of the power plays were abbreviated as both teams took themselves off multiple times. So a bad night for stats you could say.

Jarrod Schamerhorn won his third straight start between the pipes for the Dauphin Kings. He’s now officially 3-0 since joining the club earlier this month. In the end the 20 year old stopped 23 of 27 shots he faced. The Kings fired 34 on Scott Parsons who allowed six against. Parsons was replaced by Jacob Gnidziejko, he stopped just four shots in relief.

The Kings are now above .500 for the first time in a long time, their record stands at 5-4-0. However, they’ll forget about this victory by Saturday morning and move forward. Saturday night features a big tilt between the Kings and Portage Terriers, the MJHL’s top team right now. Portage ripped Swan Valley 6-3 Friday night to kick off three games in three nights.
