Kings Shutout On Home Ice

October 17, 2015

Nathan Park made 29 saves en route to his fourth shutout of the season as the Portage Terriers clipped the Dauphin Kings 2-0 Saturday night at Credit Union Place.

After all the offence from the Kings over the last couple weeks the team just couldn’t find a way to break through Portage’s 20 year old netminder. A key problem for Dauphin Saturday night were penalties. They gave up eight man advantage opportunities to the Terriers. That brought their total for the weekend to 19 with 11 chances given to the Blues on Friday evening.

On Saturday Dauphin’s Penalty Kill was excellent. However the problem this time wasn’t giving up goals on the man advantage. It was just the fact that the Kings spent time in their own zone killing off penalties when they could have been up the ice perhaps scoring goals.

Another positive for the Kings Saturday was that Jarrod Schamerhorn played his best game between the pipes for the Kings. He ended up turning aside 33 of 35 shots and was key in Dauphin killing off a lengthy 5 on 3 in the second period.

On the other side of the Special Teams battle the Kings finished 0 for 5 on the Power Play. It was another night full of chances for the Dauphin man advantage, but once again they couldn’t break through and are still looking for their first PP goal on home ice this season. It will come eventually, but must be frustrating for the club at this point. Friday night had Dauphin give up their first shorthanded goal against of the season after a bad giveaway in their own zone resulted in Brad Bowles’ twelfth of the campaign.

With the result the Kings drop to 5-5-0 on the MJHL season. Overall the weekend in my opinion was still a good one for Dauphin. They showed they can play with the top clubs in the league, and if it wasn’t for a hot goaltender tonight they might have won. Next up for the Kings is another week of practice, after that they’ll head to Neepawa and look for revenge on the Natives after falling to them twice at the start of the season. You can hear Friday’s game on 730 CKDM, Pre Game is 7:15pm with puck drop at 7:30pm. The next night Dauphin returns to Credit Union Place to battle the Steinbach Pistons at 7:00pm.

Thanks for following tonight. I’ll have more at the start of the week…

1-0 Portage Terriers at 19:42 (SH) – Brad Bowles (unassisted)

No Scoring

2-0 Portage Terriers at 1:31 – Kyler Carter from Brett Orr and Nick Henry
