Kings Fall In Special Teams Battle

October 24, 2015

discuss

Special Teams were the key factor Saturday night as the Dauphin Kings lost 5-3 to the Steinbach Pistons at Credit Union Place.

After the an all right start to the tilt in the first five minutes the Kings fell back on their heels and were outplayed by the Pistons in the opening period. Dauphin then got scored on twice shorthanded in the middle frame before waking up and netting a goal to make the score 2-1. After that the Kings fell back again and couldn’t recover. The Pistons scored three goals on the Power Play (All in the 2nd period) in the victory, they also had a shorthanded marker in the third period. Quintin Lisoway led the way for the Pistons, notching three in the affair.

Dauphin made a late push in the third period, but by then the game was pretty much decided. Kirklan Lycar (9 & 10) and Matthew Greening (5) had the goals for the Kings Saturday night.

On the other side of the Special Teams spectrum the Kings weren’t actually that bad, going 3 for 8 on the man advantage while Steinbach ended Saturday 3 for 5. Jarrod Schamerhorn (4-2) took the loss in net in the contest but couldn’t be blamed on any of the goals against. Steinbach’s Power Play goals were all well executed and Schamerhorn was left out to dry a couple other times. If it wasn’t for the 20 year old netminder the score probably could have been a lot worse for the Kings. Schamerhorn ended up stopping 26 of 31 shots while the Kings put 22 shots on Steinbach goalie Jeremy Wik.

The loss is Dauphin’s sixth of the MJHL campaign, sending them to 6-6-0. The Kings just can’t seem to string together a winning streak, the good news is it’s still early in the season and they don’t seem like they’re that far away from playing the way they want to. The club will get a lot of time to work on their game over the next little while, they play just two games over the next twelve days. Next up is another road game for the Kings, they’ll visit the Selkirk Steelers on Tuesday at 7:30pm. After that it’s a full week off until their next contest in Portage the following Wednesday. Another game away from Credit Union Place might be just what the doctor ordered for the Kings, they’re 3-1-0 on the road this month.

Thanks for following tonight…
