Shutting Them Down

November 15, 2015

Tyler Garrioch scored the winner and the Dauphin Kings used a strong Penalty Kill and excellent defensive play to edge the Winnipeg Blues 2-1 in overtime Sunday night at the MTS Iceplex.

After a scoreless opening 20 minutes Chance Thomas opened up the scoring, notching his eighth of the campaign on the Power Play. Winnipeg quickly responded when Riley Hillis beat Jarrod Schamerhorn (7-4) on his low glove side on a two-on-one.

The two clubs went through a scoreless third period before hitting overtime. However the story of the game was in the final frame where the Kings killed off four straight Winnipeg man advantages. That included one four-on-three and one five-on-three opportunity for the Blues.

In overtime Tyler Garrioch (4) had the only shot and it bounced out of the net as fast as it went in. He skated hard up the left wing late on a shift, stopped at the bottom of the face off circle and let all the Winnipeg back checkers pass him. The Winnipeg product then curled back into the slot and snapped a shot over the shoulder of Scott Parsons.

Dauphin’s Penalty Kill was superb Sunday. They went 7 for 7 and didn’t really give up any great scoring chances on the night. The Kings Power Play was 1 for 5.

Jarrod Schamerhorn grabbed the win in net, making a few key saves along the way. His team held the Blues to just 18 shots Sunday. The Kings had 24 on the Winnipeg net.

Dauphin improves to 9-10-0 on the MJHL season. They’ll try and get back to .500 on Friday when they host the OCN Blizzard at Credit Union Place, game time is 7:00pm. Listen to the One Hour Power Play on 730 CKDM that afternoon from 4-5pm. It’s FREE and will be LIVE from MR MIKES in Dauphin.

Thanks for following tonight…

Tyler Garrioch is on a 2 game point streak (1G, 1A).
