Better Effort

November 21, 2015

The Dauphin Kings played a much better game on the road Saturday night in OCN, but it still resulted in a loss, this time 5-4 to the Blizzard.

The Kings were forced to play catch up all night after falling behind 1-0 in the first seven minutes of the tilt. The club got within a goal numerous times but couldn’t complete the comeback.

In the first period Dauphin had multiple chances and hit three posts, however they fell behind 1-0 after 20. Tyler Garrioch also had a breakaway in the opening frame but he couldn’t finish.

In the second period the Kings snagged two goals. Tyler Garrioch (5) got Dauphin’s first, followed by Trevor Kavanaugh (2) later on in the period. The Kings went to the dressing room down 4-2 after 40.

Dauphin was excellent in the final frame, outplaying OCN for most of the 20 minutes. Landon Plett (4) gave the Kings early momentum but OCN responded to go up 5-3. Then with a 5 on 3 Power Play Brandon Young (2) powered one through to make it 5-4. The Kings would come close in the final four minutes but couldn’t get on even terms.

Connor Shaw (2-6) took the loss between the pipes but couldn’t be faulted. He played well and stopped 22 of 27 shots. The Kings had 42 shots on OCN’s Brett Epp.

Power Plays saw the Kings finish the night 1 for 3 while the Blizzard were also 1 for 3.

The officials Saturday night were absolutley terrible. Fortunatley for both teams it didn’t have a big effect on the final score. However this was the second straight night the officials did not know what to do when it came to the one minute “Media Timeout” that takes place after the 10 minute mark of each period. In the first period they originally didn’t call the timeout after the play was blow dead off a high stick. Then they called the break just before an OCN power play. Not only was that a problem, both linesmen had a heck of a time making the right call on icings and offsides. The linesmen also had no control in the scrums and were frequently seen standing around when fights would start to break out after whistles. There were a number of key penalties missed on both sides. If the officials do not understand the rules then maybe they shoudln’t be doing games in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, OR the one minute “Media Timeout” should be scrapped for the rest of this season because it’s obvious some are having a more difficult time grasping it than others. There are no more excuses, we are well over a third into the season.

Saturday’s loss is Dauphin’s eleventh of the season and puts them at 9-11-1 on the campaign. There were no doubt positives to take away from this contest and the Kings will try to build off it going into this week. The Kings are back in action on Wednesday when they visit the Virden Oil Capitals for the first time this season, puck drop on CKDM is 7:30pm.

Thanks for following tonight…
