First Face Off

November 25, 2015

The Dauphin Kings kick off a busy second half of the work week tonight when they head to Westman to take on the Virden Oil Capitals at Tundra Oil & Gas Place.

It’s the first meeting of the season between the two rivals and it marks the start of three games in four nights for the Kings. After this evening Dauphin returns home to battle the Selkirk Steelers on Friday and then Virden comes up for a visit on Saturday. Dauphin and Virden will face off five times in the next three weeks.

Dauphin is getting healthier and could see D-man Hayden Pierce back in game action sometime this week, possibly tonight. The addition would be a big boost to the club’s blue line. The Kings will also be looking to carry over their solid effort from Saturday night in OCN. Even though they lost they played well, out shooting the Blizzard 46-27.

You can hear this evening’s contest on 730 CKDM, the Parkland Source for Sports Pre Game Show begins at 7:15pm. Puck drop from Tundra Oil & Gas Place is 7:30pm. If you can’t listen to the game then follow me on Twitter for free updates (@ChristianCKDM)!

Intermissions: Tonight in the first intermission you’ll hear the latest edition of RAPID FIRE. This one’s with Kings forward Stephen Sisco. He’s got 60 seconds to answer up to 20 questions. Along with that in both intermissions is the out of town scoreboard. Tonight there are two other games in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, Neepawa visits Swan Valley and Steinbach hosts Portage. In the NHL there are 13 games. The Winnipeg Jets kick off a three game road trip in Washington against Dauphin’s Barry Trotz and the rest of the Capitals. All Canadian teams in action tonight are on the road, Vancouver is in Minnesota, Montreal takes on the Rangers in New York, Edmonton visits Carolina and Ottawa goes to Colorado. All that and more tonight in the first and second intermissions.

Team Stats

Kings 9-11-1: The rivalry between Dauphin and Virden continues tonight. Like OCN, the Kings have played some very good games against the Oil Capitals in the past with some victories coming on the road and being definite character builders for the club. It is, however, the first meeting between the two teams this season so you can expect a bit of a feeling out process for the first few minutes tonight. But the fact that two former Kings in Drake Bodie and Kyle Bird will likely be dressed should add some extra incentive for Dauphin’s players. Special Teams for the Kings look like this: Dauphin’s Power Play is 8th in the MJHL at 17.27% while their Penalty Kill is now up to 5th at 78.64%. The Kings Penalty Kill has been noticeably better as of late in my opinion. You always hear me say how good the Kings are on the road compared to at home this season. If you don’t believe me then just have a look at their Special Teams statistics, that pretty much paints the picture. Dauphin’s PP on the road is 4th in the MJHL (22.22%) while their PK is also 4th at 81.48%. With an assist over the weekend against OCN local product Matthew Greening (6G, 12A) now leads the Kings in points with 18. Dauphin is 2-3-0 on the road so far this month, 6-6-0 overall.

NEAT TREATS

Tyler Garrioch is on a 4 game point streak (2G, 2A).

Chance Thomas is on a 3 game point streak (2G, 1A).

Oil Capitals 14-9-0: After a slow start to the season the Virden Oil Capitals are slowly moving up the standings. The southern Manitoba club is coming off a four game winning streak that was snapped by the Steinbach Pistons over the weekend. This month the Oil Caps have lost three times, going 6-3-0 so far. Virden was a team I pegged to be inside the top five when the Manitoba Junior Hockey League season concludes in March, right now they’re fifth in the standings. Virden’s Special Teams are very solid at this point of the regular season, their Power Play is 3rd in the MJHL (27.72%) while their Penalty Kill is 4th at (81.93%). Virden’s leading scorer is Mack Hardy (11G, 11A) with 22 points. The Oil Capitals are 3-1-0 at home this month, 8-4-0 overall.
