Streak Snappers

December 18, 2015

The Dauphin Kings won their second straight game, defeating the Virden Oil Capitals 2-1 Friday night at Credit Union Place.

The victory also snapped Virden’s four game winning streak, the same streak length the Winkler Flyers had last Sunday when the Kings beat them 4-2.

Dauphin carrier their effort over from Sunday’s decision over the Flyers. It was another full 60 minute effort with the club coming out hot in the opening few minutes. They were eventually rewarded later in the first period when Kirklan Lycar notched his fourteenth of the season.

In the second period the Kings grabbed a 2-0 advantage when Thomas Lenchyshyn (4) snapped one past Patrick Zubick. The Oil Capitals would get a goal from Mack Hardy late in the middle frame to cut the lead in half.

The third period saw both teams get chances, but neither could finish. As the contest wore on you could tell the two clubs were starting to get annoyed with each other and it boiled over after the tilt when shenanigans ensued. Nothing big really came out of the gathering, but it should make Saturday’s affair in Virden much more interesting.

Brandon Holtby (5-14) was once again on his game for the Kings. He stopped 43 of 44 shots he faced, Zubick turned away 27 of 29 Dauphin shots.

The Kings’ Power Play continues to struggle, it went 0 for 5 Friday evening. Their Penalty Kill, however, was noticeably different and better despite giving up a goal against. It finished the night 6 for 7.

The victory bumps the Kings up to 13-17-2 on the MJHL season. They’re now tied with the Selkirk Steelers for 8th in the standings and are two points back of OCN for seventh with four games in hand. Dauphin will close out 2015 Saturday night when they visit the Oil Capitals in Virden. Listen to the game on 730 CKDM, opening face off is 7:30pm.

Thanks for following tonight…
