One More Time

December 19, 2015

If the Dauphin Kings and Virden Oil Capitals weren’t sick with each other yet, they likely will be by the end of tonight.

This evening the two teams meet for the fifth time in less than a month.

So far Virden has won three of the four meetings, but the Kings responded with a 2-1 victory Friday night at Credit Union Place.

Listen to this evening’s affair on 730 CKDM, the Parkland Source for Sports Pre Game Show begins at 7:15pm, puck drop is 7:30pm. If you can’t listen I don’t mind, just follow me on Twitter (@ChristianCKDM) for updates!

Intermissions: Tonight in the first intermission it’ll be the latest edition of RAPID FIRE with Kings forward Keaton Leininger. He’ll try and get through 20 questions in 60 seconds. Questions including how much can Gordon Campbell bench, his favourite line mate, what he misses about being away from the USA and more! In the second intermission and throughout the night it’s the out of town scoreboard. Lots on the menu tonight, every team is in play in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League except the Swan Valley Stampeders, so we’ll check in on the four other games. Up north the Parkland Rangers battle the Norman Northstars in the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League. The Dauphin Clippers are in action in the Westman High School Hockey League. Plus the Grandview Comets and Brandon Wheat Kings are in play along with the NHL and NFL. All that and lots more!

Team Stats

Kings 13-17-2: The Dauphin Kings will need to be on their game early tonight in Virden as I would expect the Oil Capitals to come out hard in the first five minutes. Virden’s start Friday in Dauphin wasn’t their best and resulted in the Kings getting an early Power Play, so obviously they’ll want to do better than that. From a Kings perspective tonight I think the club just needs to put forth a solid 60 minute effort. Regardless if they win or not Dauphin should want to go into the Christmas break playing well. I know, that’s a pretty obvious statement, but it really is that simple in my opinion. Coming into this evening the Kings Power Play dropped to 10th at 14.74% while their Penalty Kill rose to 78.11%, which is still 7th in the MJHL. Kirklan Lycar (14G, 13A) is atop Dauphin in points with 27, two ahead of Matthew Greening (7G, 18A). The Kings are 6-9-0 on the road this season, they’re 0-2-0 this month.

Neat Treats

Landon Plett is on a 2 game point streak (1G, 2A).

Aaron Kellogg is on a 2 game point streak (1G, 1A).

Kirklan Lycar is on a 2 game point streak (1G, 1A).

Thomas Lenchyshyn is on a 2 game point streak (1G, 1A).

Brandon Holtby has won 2 straight starts.

Oil Capitals 22-12-0: The Virden Oil Capitals will look to begin a new winning streak tonight after Dauphin halted their four gamer yesterday. Virden still finds themselves fourth in the standings, and they likely won’t be moving up or down any time soon. They’re eight points behind third place Steinbach and six ahead of fifth place Winnipeg. Like Dauphin this is Virden’s final game before the Christmas break, however the Oil Capitals will be back in action much sooner than the Kings. Their next game comes on Tuesday December 29th, Dauphin doesn’t play again until Sunday January 3rd after tonight. The Oil Capitals Special Teams remain strong entering this evening, their Power Play is 25.77% (3rd) and their Penalty Kill is 83.72% (4th). Mack Hardy (20G, 16A) leads Virden in points with 36. The Oil Capitals are 3-2-0 at home so far this month.
