Slow Start Costs Kings

December 19, 2015

A bad opening five minutes for the Dauphin Kings did them in Saturday night in Virden as they were shut out 3-0 by the Oil Capitals.

Virden scored all their goals in the first five minutes and 23 seconds en route to the victory.

Dauphin’s opening shift by Daniel Chartrand, Stephen Sisco and Tyler Garrioch was excellent, but the second and third shifts by the club is when Virden capitalized. Then the Oil Capitals notched a goal on the Power Play to gain the 3-0 advantage.

After that the Kings played well but couldn’t beat Virden goalie Sean Kuehn who turned aside 26 Dauphin shots for the shut out. Matthew Greening and Romano Morrison had arguably the best chances for the Kings in the slot, but couldn’t finish. The club also hit a couple posts Saturday evening. Brandon Holtby (5-15) stopped 25 shots in the losing effort.

Power Plays saw the Kings finish 0 for 7 while Virden went 1 for 5.

Even though the Kings fell Saturday evening they have still won two of their last three and have proved to themselves if they can play a full 60 minutes they can compete with any team in the league.

The tide has started to turn a little when it comes to Dauphin’s home and away record. The Kings finished December at 0-3-0 on the road, while at home they were 3-2-1. As they enter the Christmas break the Kings are 13-18-2 on the season, tied for eighth in the standings with the Selkirk Steelers.

With the January 10th trade deadline approaching the staff of the Kings now must decide one key question… Are they buyers, or are they sellers?

Thanks for following tonight…
