Happy New Year

January 3, 2016

The Dauphin Kings were good from start to finish Sunday night at Credit Union Place as they kicked off 2016 with a 6-2 victory over the OCN Blizzard.

After the two clubs traded goals in the opening frame the Kings responded with five unanswered to snag their 14th win of the season, and third in four contests.

Graeme Hore (5 & 6) led the way for the Dauphin on Sunday, scoring two in the tilt. Other players with goals were Thomas Lenchyshyn (5), Matthew Greening (8), Brandon Young (3) and Kirklan Lycar (15). Hore and Lenchyshyn combined for four points in the affair.

Brandon Holtby picked up where he left off before the Christmas break, continuing his solid play and making 24 saves on 26 shots. He was also named the game’s first star. The Kings had 46 shots on OCN’s Brett Epp. The Blizzard did not have a back up goalie until the third period. The first two periods Epp was their lone goaltender before Emiliem Boily showed up on the bench in the final frame.

Power Plays Sunday had OCN going 0 for 4 while Dauphin was 0 for 3. Dauphin’s Penalty Kill was excellent and generated more scoring chances than the Blizzard’s Power Play on a couple opportunities.

It’s a good start to a busy month of January for the Kings. The win is their third straight at Credit Union Place and improves their record to 14-18-2. They’re now tied with OCN for 8th in the standings but have five games in hand. They’re just two back of Selkirk with three games in hand on the Steelers.

Next up for Dauphin is a contest Thursday night in Winnipeg against the Blues. That game can be heard on 730 CKDM (7:00pm). The Kings then visit Selkirk on Friday, also on 730 CKDM (7:30pm). I’ll be back with more this week.

Thanks for following tonight…
