Not So Special Teams

January 7, 2016

Bad penalties in the third period cost the Dauphin Kings a shot at at least a point Thursday night in a 6-2 loss to the Winnipeg Blues.

Let’s begin though, by talking about the first two period. The Kings controlled most of the play for the first 40 minutes. Despite being down 3-0 after 20 Dauphin likely deserved a better fate. In the middle frame the Kings broke through after carrying most of the period. Chance Thomas (12) and Matthew Greening (9) notched goals to get their club within one.

However in the third period the Kings started on the Penalty Kill and couldn’t recover, giving up three goals against on the man advantage. The shenanigans in the period culminated when Matthew Greening was given a Match Penalty for a high cross check on Winnipeg’s Joel MacGillivray, who did not go to the dressing room and later returned to the game. With the infraction, Greening will be suspended by the MJHL for at least three games. It’s unfortunate because the line of Greening, Morrison and Thomas was Dauphin’s best Thursday.

When it came to the Dauphin Power Play, the club did pick up a goal, going 1 for 3 on the night. The Blues were 3 for 4 after scoring twice during Greening’s five minute major.

Brandon Holtby (6-16) played ok for the Kings, he turned aside 28 of 34 shots. His club fired 33 at Winnipeg’s Scott Parsons.

This game, like a few others this season, was won by Special Teams. If this was a contest decided by 5-on-5 play, Dauphin would have taken it. The Kings were excellent in that category Thursday, and they’ll try and build off it Friday when they visit the Steelers in Selkirk for a key game in the standings.

Thanks for following tonight…

Just what do our Kings not understand re taking stupid penalties. We have never seen a goal scored from someone sitting in the penalty box.
Not the way to make the fans come out either.
