Safe House

January 12, 2016

The Dauphin Kings will try to extend their winning streak at Credit Union Place when they begin a very busy week tonight.

This evening the Kings battle the Waywayseecappo Wolverines. Dauphin has won three in a row at home.

The tilt is the final one this season at Credit Union Place between the two teams. In four games so far the Kings have won all of them, but some have been closer than others. One game was a three goal differential, two were two and in one game the clubs were separated by just a goal when the final buzzer sounded. These two teams will meet once more before the season comes to a close, it’ll be later this month in Waywayseecappo (Jan. 28).

Former goalies will likely face off tonight. Troy Martyniuk (Former King) could go for Wayway while Brandon Holtby (Former Wolverine) could go for Dauphin.

As mentioned it’s a very busy week for the Kings. After tonight they hit the road for three games in three nights. Friday they visit Winkler and then Saturday and Sunday they’re in Steinbach to skate with the Pistons. So a win tonight might be key for Dauphin as they get set to take on two of the MJHL’s top teams this weekend.

Listen and watch tonight’s game on FASTHockey. Opening face off is pegged for 7:00pm. If you can’t watch then follow me on Twitter (@ChristianCKDM) for updates.

Team Stats

Kings 14-20-2 (9th): It’s your favourite broken record and I’m going to repeat myself again: The Dauphin Kings continue to have games in hand on all teams in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. Entering tonight they have three games in hand on Wayway, EIGHT in hand on the OCN Blizzard (8th) and three on the Selkirk Steelers (7th). If the Kings can string together a winning streak or two before the campaign comes to a close in early March, they could easily move up the standings. Dauphin’s Power Play has scored a goal in two straight games, it comes into this evening 9th in the MJHL at 14.53%. On the Penalty Kill the Kings are 8th at 77.84%. Kirklan Lycar (15G, 14A) leads the Kings in points with 29. Dauphin has won three straight on home ice and are 1-2-0 so far this month.

Wolverines 11-24-4 (10th): After starting 2016 with a victory over the Winnipeg Blues the Waywayseecappo Wolverines have lost two straight. Wayway was supposed to play Winkler last week, but because of the Flyers’ bus breaking down that game will be rescheduled. Wayway is just two points back of the Kings for 9th place, but the Wolverines’ problem is they’ve played three more games than Dauphin. Wayway will likely look to former Kings goalie Troy Martyniuk for the win tonight. Since joining Waywayseecappo from Brooks (AJHL) he’s 3-4 with a 2.63 Goals Against Average and a .917 Save Percentage in eight games. Wayway has a solid Power Play, it’s 6th in the MJHL at 20.14% while their Penalty Kill isn’t great, it’s 10th at 73.49%. Twenty year old Johl Swedlo (13G, 16A) leads the Wolverines in points with 29.
