Kings Lose 4-1, Give Up Four Power Play Goals

January 17, 2016

The Dauphin Kings scored the only five-on-five goal Saturday night but it wasn’t enough as they came up short 4-1 to the Steinbach Pistons.

Unfortunately for Dauphin Special Teams were the key to Saturday’s tilt. The Pistons went 4 for 9 on the Power Play, at one point they were 3 for 4 on the night.

Even though they didn’t win the game the Kings showed a lot of positives for the second straight night. Tyler Garrioch (7) had the team’s lone goal late in the first period to cut the Pistons’ lead to 2-1. He was arguably Dauphin’s best player, so was Landon Plett. He didn’t hit the score sheet but he did generate a lot of chances.

Connor Shaw (3-6) made his first start of 2016 and didn’t look bad. With all four goals against on the Power Play it’s tough to blame the goaltender for this loss. He stopped 35 shots from the Pistons while his counterpart, Jeremy Wik, made 21 saves.

Even though both teams battled terrible, inconsistent officiating, Dauphin still needs to stop pucks from going in their net. They also need to stop taking undisciplined penalties. Steinbach is clearly one of the top teams in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League when it comes to the man advantage.

A brutal missed call early in the third period when the Kings pressing looked as if they’d get a penalty shot, but the officials did not make the call. Even thought the video below clearly shows a player covering the puck with his glove in the goal crease.

Dauphin is now 15-22-2 on the MJHL season. They’ll play their 40th game of the season Sunday night when they tangle with the Pistons again in Steinbach. With the amount of shenanigans that took place late in Saturday’s contest, Sunday’s could be an interesting one…
