Dauphin Kings Three ★‘s Of The Week

January 18, 2016

The Dauphin Kings concluded their road heavy start to 2016 over the weekend.

The MJHL club couldn’t snag any points in losses to Winkler (8-1) and Steinbach (4-1 & 5-4) but the team arguably got better as the weekend went on and they’ll look to build off that Tuesday when they kick off a three game home stand at Credit Union Place, where they’ve won four in a row.

This week the Kings are home to the Swan Valley Stampeders on Tuesday (7:00pm), then they’ll get a couple days off before entertaining the Portage Terriers on Friday (7:00pm) and then the Steinbach Pistons on Saturday (7:00pm).

The One Hour Power Play Show returns to 730 CKDM this Friday when they Kings host the Portage Terriers. It runs from 4-5pm! Listen to show as I tee up the weekend and give you details on Saturday’s “Ukranian Night” at Credit Union Place. It should be a great game with tickets being just five bucks and lots going on at the rink during the contest as well! It’s sponsored by Ruff’s Furniture in Dauphin. I’ll have a preview of the show later this week.

Three ‘s Of The Week

3. Hayden Pierce

Although he put up just two points in four games last week D-man Hayden Pierce made most of his noise in the defensive zone. His play throughout Dauphin’s four games was excellent, especially in Steinbach and Winkler where he was physical and didn’t back down from some of the league’s best. The Assistant Captain has been a steady, key player for the Kings since battling injuries earlier this season. The Winnipeg product has two goals and four assists in 23 games played this season.

2. Tyler Garrioch

Tyler Garrioch’s week was one that should have him, along with Landon Plett, in the mix for MJHL Player of the Week honours. Garrioch led the Kings in all four games with his never quit attitude on the ice and it showed in his point total. He grabbed two goals and five assists and moved up to third on Dauphin in scoring with 25 points (7G, 18A). The Winnipeg product is also riding a five game point streak as he enters play this week. Garrioch has eight points in that span (2G, 6A).

1. Landon Plett

The Dauphin Kings were led by Landon Plett this past week. The 19 year old from Blumenort had five goals and two assists in four games. Plett picked up five points (3G, 2A) in the Kings’ 9-3 victory over Waywayseecappo on Tuesday and was key in Dauphin’s almost comeback against the Steinbach Pistons on Sunday. He scored two goals in the final frame to get the Kings from 4-2 to 4-4 with the Pistons. Plett is fifth on Dauphin in scoring with 24 points, he’s third on the team in goals scored with 12 so far this season. The 6’0 forward has already surpassed his point total from last year (18).

Honourable Mention

Trevor Kavanaugh

Even though the Dauphin Kings lost all three of their games on the road this past weekend there were still some bright spots. Trevor Kavanaugh was one of those. He tallied two goals and an assist in three games and played very solid defensively. The 18 year old is second in D-man scoring on the Kings right now with four goals and 11 assists in 32 contests.
