Busy Weekend

January 22, 2016

The Dauphin Kings begin a two game in two night stretch tonight against two of the league’s top teams.

This evening the Kings will battle the first place Portage Terriers. It’s the fourth get together of the season between these two teams. The RBC Cup Champion Terriers have won all three meetings so far (2-0, 6-3 & 4-1).

The Kings have actually played good games at home against the Terriers dating back to last season. This year the only time the two clubs faced off in Dauphin the contest was close with Portage coming out on top with a 2-0 victory. Last year the two teams went to a couple shoot outs at Credit Union Place.

Turn on your radio this afternoon and listen in to the One Hour Power Play Show on 730 CKDM. It runs from 4:00pm to 5:00pm LIVE from MR MIKES in Dauphin. For a FULL PREVIEW of the show CLICK HERE! Opening face off tonight is 7:00pm. If you can’t watch on FASTHockey then follow me on Twitter (@ChristianCKDM) for updates!

Here’s Kings Head Coach and General Manager Marc Berry ahead of the game. Lots to touch on here, including what goes well with perogies for Saturday night… We begin, however, with chat on the Kings and how well they’ve done at home as of late, and why Berry thinks that is…

Team Stats

Kings 16-23-2 (9th): The Dauphin Kings remain 9th in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League standings. Coming in to tonight they continue to have a number of games in hand on clubs around them, but it’s getting to the point where the Kings cannot worry about games in hand and just go out and play well. At this point of the season winning games and establishing your play is key. Dauphin’s Power Play and Penalty Kill will obviously be tested against the league’s top team, but the Kings’ Special Teams have been much better as of late. Right now they’re 9th in the MJHL on the Power Play, but up to 15.48%. On the PK side Dauphin is 8th at 77.51%. With 35 points Kings forward Kirklan Lycar (16G, 19A) continues to lead the team in scoring. Dauphin is 3-0-0 at home so far this month.

Tyler Garrioch is on a 5 game point streak (3G, 8A).

Trevor Kavanaugh is on a 2 game point streak (1G, 2A).

Portage 39-6-2 (1st): After a little bit of struggling in the middle of December the Portage Terriers seem to have found their game again. They come to Dauphin on a seven game winning streak and have lost just once in 2016, that loss came to the Steinbach Pistons (4-3 SO). Portage was ranked 4th on the CJHL Top 20 this week. They’ve spent most of the season inside the top five in the weekly list that ranks all the Junior ‘A’ clubs across Canada. As mentioned, it’ll be a good test for Dauphin’s Special Teams tonight at Credit Union Place. Portage has the 4th best Power Play (23.16%) in the MJHL and the number one Penalty Kill (89.84%). Brad Bowles (30G, 40A) is the top dog when it comes to scoring for Portage, he has 70 points which is 2nd overall in the league behind OCN’s Logan Harland (74). Portage has lost just eight games this season, those eight games were to Steinbach (2), Winkler (2), Selkirk, OCN, Swan Valley and Virden.
