Dauphin Loses 6-3 In Virden

February 2, 2016

The Virden Oil Capitals scored two goals in each period, en route to a 6-3 victory over the Dauphin Kings Tuesday night at Tundra Oil & Gas Place.

Aside from Dauphin’s weak Penalty Kill in the opening frame they had a solid first period. After going down 1-0 Matthew Greening (10) and Trevor Kavanaugh (7) notched goals for Dauphin to put them up 2-1 in the late stages of the first. Virden, however, would bounce back with their second man advantage goal late in the period.

In the second the Oil Capitals pulled away as they added two more to make it 4-2. Dauphin got back within one when Kelby Picard (2) made a nice tip on an Aaron Kellogg point shot. That’s as close as the Kings would get though, Virden added two more in the final frame including an empty netter which turned out to be Ben Dalke’s third of the contest.

As mentioned, Dauphin’s Special Teams were not great Tuesday. They gave up three Power Play goals against, finishing the night 2 for 5 on the PK. They were 1 for 3 on the man advantage.

Brandon Holtby (8-25) suffered another loss between the pipes for the Kings, he stopped 30 of the 35 shots he faced. He’d likely want to have the fifth goal against back, one that found its way under his arm in the third period. Dauphin fired 28 on Virden netminder Sean Kuehn.

Parkland Ranger forward Riese Gaber played in his second game with the Kings this season. He looked solid on a line with Brad Goethals. Both forwards saw a couple of scoring chances during the evening as they played with Daniel Chartrand. With a few games under each player’s belt you can tell they’re starting to settle in.

The Kings won’t see the Oil Capitals again this season unless the two clubs meet in the playoffs. Virden took the season series, going 5-1-0.

The loss is Dauphin’s sixth straight, they’ll try and snap the skid on Friday when they welcome the Portage Terriers to Credit Union Place. Game time is 7:00pm! The Kings are now 16-28-3 on the season.
