Kings Lose First Game On 3-in-3

February 12, 2016

The Dauphin Kings hung around for the first two periods, but couldn’t battle back from a third period deficit in a 4-1 loss to the Steinbach Pistons Friday night.

The Kings and the Pistons played a pretty even first period and ended up going to the dressing room tied 0-0 after 20.

In the second all three goals were scored on the Power Play with Steinbach outplaying Dauphin by a good amount. It was 2-1 after 40. Dauphin’s lone goal Friday came off the stick of Stephen Sisco (5) on the man advantage. The Kings seemed to battle the long change in the second period, getting hemmed in a number of times and not being able to flip lines.

In the third Dauphin failed to show up in time and it cost them when Cole Smith tallied two in the first five minutes for the Pistons to give them a 4-1 advantage.

Bad penalties were also a factor in Dauphin’s 30th loss of the season. Sisco put the club down two men after taking a slashing penalty. Steinbach scored on the 5-on-3 and the 5-on-4 after. When the night was over the Kings finished 1 for 2 on the Power Play and 3 for 5 on the Penalty Kill.

Brandon Holtby (8-27) took the loss in net for the Kings, he stopped 35 of 39 shots. His counterpart Jeremy Wik made 22 saves on Friday.

The loss slips Dauphin to 18-30-3 on the MJHL season. Some good news out of Swan River though as the Stampeders beat Selkirk Friday, which means the Kings are still just three points back of the Steelers for 8th in the standings. Selkirk has now lost four in a row.

Some bad news Friday night for the Kings. The club lost the services of Matthew Greening in the second period. He left the game with an upper body injury and will be reevaluated in the morning. Tyler Garrioch also blocked a shot in the opening period and battle through a considerable amount of pain.

Dauphin will look to regroup for their second game of the 3-in-3 tomorrow when they head to Winkler to battle the Flyers for the final time this season. Listen on CKDM starting at 7:15pm with the Parkland Source for Sports Pre Games Show!
