Kings Lose 6-1 In Portage

February 14, 2016

There were some positives and negatives for the Dauphin Kings Sunday night in Portage, but in the end the club fell 6-1 to the Terriers.

Dauphin was behind from the first 55 seconds of the contest on after Portage started hot and held them in their own zone for the opening shift before Brett Orr capitalized on a chance in the high slot. After that Portage scored two more in the frame. They added two in the second and one more in the third to grab their 15th straight win.

As mentioned there was some good and some bad for Dauphin Sunday night.

On the good side the Kings’ Power Play looked really good against the top Penalty Kill in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. It finished the night 1 for 3 with Landon Plett (14) (Below) scoring the club’s lone talley on a nice tic tac toe play in the second period. Dauphin’s other man advantages were strong with lots of pressure and solid scoring chances. The line of Plett, Lycar and Garrioch once again led the way for the Kings on Sunday. Daniel Chartrand played well too I thought. He had a great scoring chance in the slot but hit the post in the second period (Below).

On the bad side the Kings fell asleep for stretches in the game and it cost them. It’s hard to fault Dauphin on a lot considering Portage is one of the top teams in Canada and they are so good at doing the little things that can win you games. The Terriers had just three Power Play chances but scored on two of them.

Despite the lopsided score the shots were pretty even with the Terriers outshooting the Kings 29-26. Dauphin goalie Jarrod Schamerhorn (9-8) was relieved of his duties in the second period. I believe he was taken out of the game for a break, not because of his bad play. Schamerhorn stopped 13 of 18 shots during his time in goal. Brandon Holtby turned aside 10 of 11 after replacing him.

The loss is Dauphin’s third straight and puts them at 18-32-3 on the MJHL season. They have seven games left in their year. Next up is a rematch with Winkler on Friday at Credit Union Place. You can hear the One Hour Power Play Show that afternoon on 730 CKDM, it goes from 4-5pm live from MR MIKES in Dauphin!
