Strong Finish

March 2, 2016

The Dauphin Kings are headed into the Manitoba Junior Hockey League playoffs on a high following a 4-1 win over the OCN Blizzard Wednesday night.

Unlike Tuesday the Kings put together a full 60 minutes and battled through some adversity in the third period to get the win.

In the first period Dauphin scored the only goal as their Power Play remains hot on the road. Chance Thomas grabbed his 15th of the season on the man advantage.

The two teams went into the middle frame and Dauphin once again pulled through with the only goal. It came off the stick of Trevor Kavanaugh (12) from almost the exact same place he scored from on Tuesday, this time even strength.

In the third period the Kings pulled away when Tyler Derlach (4) notched his second in many nights, jumping on a loose puck off a Daniel Chartrand shot. OCN made things interesting when Tre Potskin got a friendly bounce on a point shot midway through the third. The Kings response after the goal against was excellent, and eventually Graeme Hore (9) put them back up by three later in the frame.

Special Teams had Dauphin end the night 1 for 3 on the Power Play and 2 for 2 on the Penalty Kill.

Brandon Holtby (10-28) was superb between the pipes for the Kings Wednesday, he stopped 37 of 38 shots including a magnificent post-to-post save in the third period to keep his club up by two. Dauphin had 41 shots on OCN’s Brett Epp.

It’s the sixth straight game the Dauphin Kings have earned at least a point. They finish the MJHL season with a record of 21-33-6 and will LIKELY go on to play the Selkirk Steelers in the best of three survivor series which begins Sunday.

I’ll have more later this week.

Thanks for following tonight…
