Kings Comeback Falls Short

March 6, 2016

The Dauphin Kings battled back from a 5-2 deficit at the start of the third period to force overtime, but a bad bounce cost them in a 6-5 OT loss to the Steelers on Sunday.

Dauphin’s start to the contest was excellent. Just over one minute in the Kings scored on Thomas Lenchyshyn’s first of the post season. However after a couple more chances by Dauphin the Steelers responded with four unanswered, chasing Kings starting goal Jarrod Schamerhorn after three goals against.

In the middle frame the two teams traded goals. Dauphin’s came from Keaton Leininger.

The Kings started the final frame down 5-2 but scored three straight in the in the first five minutes to get the game at 5-5. Dauphin controlled the third period and Selkirk were clearly on their heels. The Kings just couldn’t snag the go ahead goal.

In overtime the two clubs traded chances but it was a bounce at centre ice that allowed Dexter Kuczek to walk in on a breakaway and get the Steelers the victory. It was just an unfortunate break for Trevor Kavanaugh who went down on one knee to stop the puck at the red line, but it knuckled around him and sent the Selkirk forward in on a breakaway from the Dauphin blue line.

The official shots had Selkirk outshooting Dauphin 47-38 but I thought the shots were inflated on the Steelers side. Brandon Holtby (0-1) played well in relief of Schamerhorn, but takes the loss between the pipes.

Power Plays on Sunday had the Kings finishing 0 for 3 while Selkirk was 0 for 2. The Steelers second man advantage was a three minute one after Chance Thomas was charged with a five minute fighting penatly which worked out to be a three minute Power Play with other infractions worked in.

There are loads of positives the Kings can take from the affair, their never quit play got them back in the game and a few chances away from winning it.

Dauphin returns to Credit Union Place for game two on Tuesday. Opening face off is 7:30pm. You can get tickets for game two Monday and Tuesday at the Parkland Rec Complex Reception Desk. Monday from 8:30am to 4:30pm and Tuesday from 8:30am to puck drop at 7:30pm. Don’t forget about the FREE One Hour Power Play Show on CKDM Tuesday afternoon, it goes at 4:00pm!
