Kings Look To Keep Season Going

March 8, 2016

The Dauphin Kings will try and get their best-of-three MJHL Survivor Series to a third and deciding game tonight when they host the Selkirk Steelers at Credit Union Place.

The series shifts to the City of Sunshine after the Kings fell 6-5 in overtime to the Steelers on Sunday night in Selkirk. Dauphin had a lot of positives in the game, including their comeback in the third period to force the game to overtime.

Now players will be looked at to step up tonight and possibly play the role of hero if Dauphin is to fight another day. The key question coming into the affair is who will start in goal. Jarrod Schamerhorn didn’t start Sunday’s game off well and was replaced by Brandon Holtby in the first period. It’s unclear who will get the nod between the pipes tonight for the Kings.

Listen to tonight’s game on 730 CKDM and, the Parkland Source for Sports Pre Game Show kicks off at 7:15pm on CKDM and on FASTHockey. Opening face off is a bit later than usual, 7:30pm. If you cant watch or listen then follow me on Twitter for updates (@ChristianCKDM)!

The other MJHL Survivor Series is in Waywayseecappo with the Swan Valley Stampeders looking to finish off the Wolverines. Also tonight are games in the NHL, including the Winnipeg Jets who are home to the Nashville Predators and the Tim Hortons Brier marches on in Ottawa. So listen for all that in the intermissions.

Team Stats

Kings (0-1): With their season on the line the Dauphin Kings will look to replicate their play from the third period on Sunday. They dominated the Steelers and scored the frame’s only three goals which eventually got them to overtime. Since the start of December the Kings have been much better on the Credit Union Place ice surface, going 9-6-4. Power Plays in the opening game of this series were a non factor, although Selkirk did have a three minute man advantage in game one and couldn’t capitalize. The Kings Power Play had good and bad moments, but finished game one 0 for 3. At home this season the Kings PP was ranked last in the MJHL but in their last three games at Credit Union Place Dauphin has scored four man advantage goals, going 4 for 14 in that span, which is just under 30%. Four players are on top of the Kings when it comes to playoff scoring. Thomas Lenchyshyn (1G, 1A), Landon Plett (1G, 1A), Keaton Leininger (1G, 1A) and Romano Morrison (0G, 2A) all have two points.

Sam Schultz is on a 6 game point streak (0G, 8A).

Tyler Derkach is on a 3 game point streak (3G, 0A)

Trevor Kavanaugh is on a 3 game point streak (3G, 0A).

Romano Morrison is on a 2 game point streak (0G, 4A).

Daniel Chartrand is on a 2 game point streak (0G, 2A).

Steelers (1-0): Selkirk comes into Dauphin with one day of rest after they beat the Kings on Sunday. The goal for the Steelers is to get this series over and done with as soon as possible, not just for the obvious factors, but because the team will be running low on gas with this affair being their fourth in five nights. Selkirk will not want to play again tomorrow, if they do it’ll be a tough turnaround with the long bus ride home this evening. The Steelers start is just as important as Dauphin’s tonight. Selkirk’s Power Play was much like Dauphin’s in game one, it didn’t score and went 0 for 2. It looked ok at times but didn’t generate much. Dexter Kuczek (2G, 0A), Victor Knaub (1G, 1A) and Taylor Fisher (0G, 2A) lead Selkirk in points through one post season game with two.
