Kings Finish Season With 3-2 Loss

February 28, 2015

A controversial goal in the third period turned out to be the game winner as the Virden Oil Capitals edged the Dauphin Kings 3-2 Saturday night in Virden.

Ben Williams grabbed the eventual game winner 39 seconds into the final frame. The goal was scored after a Virden player bumped in to Kings goalie Connor Shaw (9-6) and forced the net off its pegs. The puck then slid out font and Williams put it into the empty net, which was already off. Despite the confusion on the ice, lone referee Kevin Mitchell called it a goal. Even the goal judge behind the Dauphin net was trying to wave the official over to say something to him, but he decided not to speak to the Kings or the goal judge and skated to the time keeper box. The goal stood, and as mentioned, turned out to be the winner. It’s disappointing that this happened considering the magnitude of the game for both teams. Earlier this season the referees spoke to the goal judges when they had to say something in Winkler, I guess that isn’t allowed in Virden?

Back to the contest…

The Kings played pretty good for most of it, but were unable to keep the lead, giving up 1-0 and 2-1 advantages. Scoring Saturday for Dauphin were Ty Moffat (2) and Drake Bodie (7).

The bad part about the Kings’ game Saturday was their Power Play, they finished 0 for 6 and could never really set up in the offensive zone throughout the night. Dauphin’s Penalty Kill went 2 for 3. Virden outshot the Kings 31-22.

3 Stars

3. Drake Bodie (DAU) (1G)
2. Devan Schram (VDN) (1G, 2A)
1. Ben Williams (VDN) (2G)

Dauphin finishes the 2014-15 Manitoba Junior Hockey League regular season with a record of 23-31-6. Their loss Saturday combined with a 4-1 Wayway win against Selkirk means the Kings will be on the road for game one of their Survivor Series with the Wolverines. The best of three set begins sometime next week. Stay tuned for the schedule.

Thanks for following tonight and good night from the bus…
